Time to Build an Ark

I live in the Pacific Northwest but this is ridiculous!  We’re on our third straight day of heavy rain–all the rivers are swollen and threatening to spill over their banks, puddles cover roadways.  The meteorologists call it “The Pineapple Express,” which apparently means it’s raining cats and pineapples, or something like that.

No, really, it’s some tropical jet stream bringing rain straight from Hawaii.  Or something.

Personally, I enjoy listening to relentless rain.  I opened the kitchen window to the noisy gusts of wind.  I just don’t want to get wet, so I haven’t been outside all day.

The children came prancing into the room this afternoon, telling me, “Mom, we’re pretending to be someone else!”

I said, “Oh yeah?  Who are you pretending to be?”

The four-year old boy twirled and said, “I am pretending to be a boy who can ride a skateboard!”

And my four-year old daughter pointed to her head and exclaimed, “And I am pretending to be a girl with a heart in my head!”

The boy said, “And I am a boy with a brain in his head!”

Well.  Okay, then.

My daughter spent her morning taping things to her giant box.  I love how much peace a roll of Scotch tape can buy a mom.

And then they all climbed inside to giggle and squirm.  This picture was taken in the middle of the day.  See how gloomy it is here?

And the rain continues to fall.  (For once, I’m happy I don’t live on a river.)

  1. Please send some of your rain down under. The media have announced today that we are having the worst drought in 1000 years (not 100) and things are grim, particularly for the farming folk.
Just love the photo of your daughter next to the box. Kids are so weird.

  2. Edna B Says: “Kids are so weird.”

    If I may say so:

    Weird = Magnificent !

And my Nanna (God rest her soul) used to always say,
    “Rain never hurt the flowers…”

Hang in there & maybe a little shout out to St.Anthony for the ‘sun’ that you all have ‘lost’… a little ‘tony tony look around, something’s lost & can’t be found’ always works for me, always.

    Take care!

  3. Wow! I live in southern California and we have had unbearably hot weather with wind the last few days (95 yesterday), wish we would get some of that rain…sounds heavenly!
    I love the rain!
Well until I have to get out in it!
    Have a blessed day!

  4. Tape really is the universal gift and distractor. I need to go buy a box of them for my kids for Christmas!

Sorry about the rain, but it is what makes your state sooooo beautiful.

  5. I can’t keep tape in this house. I buy a roll, and by nightfall everything in sight is taped closed, up down, whatever direction they can tape something, they do it.

The rain, well, I’m glad I’m not you, I can’t stand the rain.

And what can beat a good cardboard box and a roll of tape for fun? Pretty much nothing.

  7. I saw the weather report for the country this morning and thought about you when they talked about all your rain. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get the rain when you needed it? And not in massive downpours!

The pictures of the kids are so cute! My little one loves to tape things too. She also likes cutting things so we have constant knowledge of where EVERY pair of scissors (or scissor-like tools) are in the house.

    Good luck, don’t float away!
