Along with my protest of Science Fair Projects, I must add my critical voice to the issue of half-days of school. While I understand the benefit of half-days for the teachers and administrators, I hate half-days. I hate getting up in the mornings to get my student off to school only to have him return three hours later, hungry for lunch. Today, I hated the noise of children running through the house all afternoon and the shouting . . . half-days are loud days around here. Some days I tolerate loud less well than other days. Today was one of those days.
That is all.
Oh, and kudos to the local school district which cut short a dance (and cancelled future dances) because kids refused to stop simulating sexual intercourse on the dance floor. Someone ought to give those school administrators a large cash reward. Hooray for sensible adults.

Good for them! We recently had a similar event happen in Nova Scotia, and I was appalled at outrage that the PARENTS expressed towards the administration!!! Why do so many people view this as just normal teen behaviour?

We are on our 4th straight day of school cancellings. Add in to that the fact that the snow has frozen to ice making in less than fun to play in and the fact that the car is stuck and you end up with some very wired children who vasilate between running around like maniacs and weeping.

I never remember getting 1/2 days, except maybe at the end of the school year and possibly parent/teacher conferences (which they don’t even have in our school district). I think it’s a way of playing the numbers – 1/2 day counts as a full day in this neck of the woods, so why not have more 1/2 days?

It’s about time! I remember when I was in high school and the “token gift” they gave at our prom was going to be a champagne glass with crap in it. My Mom went nuts on the school principal because, as you know, we are trying to get our teens NOT to drink…not give them the glass to do so! I totally backed my Mom, but I know others thought of her as a prude. Why do we have to push our teens to grow up so fast now? I’m only 31, but I can’t believe how they are dressing now and all they are “into”–makes me afraid for my own kids who are 6 and 4! Off my box now!

Good for the principal at that High School. I remember the kind of dancing that went on at my prom 9 years ago, and I bet it has just gotten worse.

I am amazed how each generation differs from the previous. Who knew?! Dirty dancing when we were young? I think we would have died of embarrassment LOL.

I learned how to loathe half-days on a whole new level yesterday. I forgot about our half day, and consequently was not at the bus stop on time. My poor son was crying his eyes out, until another mother took pity and brought him home to me. He may have made me a new friend out of it though- she was totally understanding about it. I mean, who does half days on a thursday?! Ugh.

It’s refreshing to hear that a school did the right thing. Shame on the parents who complained and want refunds.

I remember the powers that be not liking our style of dance either…..but we weren’t simulating a sex act.
At least I don’t think we were. 🙂

I don’t know if you read Tom Wolfe, but his most recent book kind of showed his age when he described the way kids dance now.
How did this happen??
I remember at the very tail end of college for me I was at a party and a guy started doing this to me and I began laughing hysterically and took a few steps back. I will kill any guy who does this to my daughter (and her too if she goes along with it!).

I used to hate 1/2 days, and then I got a job at school. The only days I have off are 1/2 days, so now I LOVE them.

Huge *HUGE* Kudos to those school administrators. Something like that happened out this way last year. It is nice to see them finally standing up to the students again! I remember when being sent to the office or such was a scary thing… Now, I think the school is more afraid of the violence or lawsuits than they are interested in discipline.
I hate half days because my daughter boards the school bus at 6:41 AM and returns at 11:05. I hate getting up that early in the first place. What’s worse? The last day of school not only being a half day, but a MONDAY! What idiot came up with that? (And, yes, I am serious).
Hope it quiets down over there!

That’s funny, I’ve always loved when my kids had half days! And I agree, kudos for the administration for stopping that “dance.”

I don’t understand the problem with the dancing, each generation objects to the next’s style of dancing as inappropriate it seems, but it’s dancing which I think is an inherently sexual activity. So long as the kids didn’t feel forced to participate, I don’t see the problem. Is it better for kids to dance like that somewhere else, without adults around? I don’t think it will stop just because kids aren’t allowed to do it at school, in fact, it probably makes it all the more exciting that it’s illicit.
