Snow Day Ad Nauseam

Seriously.  Global warming?  I only wish.  We’ve had snow on the ground for a solid week now.  Last night it snowed again.  The kids had yet another snow day.  Even they have grown weary of the cold.  We live in the land of “mild” winters . . . rainy winters . . . green winters full of umbrellas.

But!  This afternoon, I spent three solid hours organizing my scrapbooking supplies in anticipation of Saturday when I will spend a whole day sorting through pictures and putting them in scrapbooks.  That was kind of fun, even though I have this super sore spot right between my shoulder blades.  I haven’t touched my scrapbooks since last February when I went on that scrapbooking weekend with four other women, despite my best intentions to scrapbook regularly upon my return.

Tomorrow, school will start on a two-hour delay.  You’d think that three or four inches of snow wouldn’t incapacitate a place like it does here, but the problem is that our cities and counties are not equipped to handle snow removal.  Some winters we don’t get any snow at all.  So, when the snow falls, and the temperatures drop, if any of the snow has melted, it turns to ice.  And if the snow hasn’t melted, it gets compacted into ice.  We have no snow plows or de-icing trucks for the side streets.  Some places, they only put sand on the roads which does not melt ice.

Add that to our hilly geography and we are stranded in our houses, imprisoned by the slopes that surround us.

I need to leave my house.  Need.  I need to leave.

I hope the snow melts soon.  Supposedly, tomorrow it will get up to forty degrees.  I hope it does.

Meanwhile, the stomach virus wends its way through the family.  My husband is better now . . . one of my 13-year olds just informed me that, “Mom, my stomach hurts and I just used the bathroom and it still hurts!”  My 4-year old seems well and is sassy as ever.  I am the only one who hasn’t been sick and I keep declaring that I simply won’t get it.  Can you will yourself not to get a stomach virus?  I’ll let you know.

Meanwhile, bring on global warming!  I’m ready!  My icy sidewalk beckons you!

  1. I remember being surprised when I learned that the schools here in Alaska rarely close despite our outrageous winters; I was so used to the same thing you are experiencing now. It’s all in the equipment dahling, and equipment we have. Nice.

I’d rather set my hair on fire and run through the street naked than scrapbook. Will this craft ever go away?

    Just wondering.

    Praying you don’t get sick!

  3. Texas comes to a halt with snow or ice, so I feel for you. It is wet, freezing cold and an ice filled wonderland this morning. School is delayed until 10……..and it is still sleeting. I hope they realize that things are not going to be defrosted by then!

  4. DH’s parents live near Seattle, too. I just can’t believe all the weather you’ve been having there! I told DH the other day that Seattle might need to buy a second snowplow! 😉

  5. We are now frigid in the Hand of God state, MI. This past weekend we got some ice, even though driving can be treacherous, the trees and bushes look beautiful when the sun hits them. They look like lace.

  6. Yes, I hear you too! And, I second what Marianne said about the trees and such looking so beautiful covered in ice and glistening in the sunlight! BUT!!! My older daughter did not have school Monday due to the MLK holiday. My youngest should have, but the ice storm knocked out power to the campus. Tuesday, it was simply too icy and they had another day off. My youngest only does school on Monday and Wednesday, but her Tuesday (only) dance class was canceled so the Moms wouldn’t have to drag their 3&4 year olds into the icy wonderland. Fortunately, today there is school. Even though I woke up to 2 degrees here in Mid-Michigan and our corn bin frozen shut for the third day in a row (we use corn for heat — WAY cheaper than propane).

Good luck on getting out soon. I need a childless excursion soon too.

  7. Global un-warming has crept inside my house. My fingers go numb while sitting at the keyboard, and I can blow ‘smoke’ rings in the back stairwell. I think the weather is a metaphor for the schizophrenic world we live in – or something like that.

  8. I hear you on the icy, hilly roads. We live on a little hill and have had fits over having to drive down, almost hitting cars, VERY stressfull. Yesterday, after a week of this, we finally see a plow/sand truck. He even had a hard time getting up, had to come up backwards, sanding his way up. I’m ready for the 40 degrees to hit us, it’ll seem like a heatwave.

  9. Oh you wouldn’t wish for global warming if you lived here (Australia). We’re in one of the worst droughts ever, the temperatures are frequently in the high 30’s (that’s in celcius – somewhere between 95 and 100F) and half our country seems to be on fire with wild bushfires raging out of control and burning down homes. We’re running out of water in most areas and I don’t remember when there weren’t water restrictions!

Wanna swap? Just for a day or two – I could really use the chill for a while!
