At least my teeth are clean.

I went for my twice-a-decade dentist appointment this afternoon.  The dentist cheered after he looked in my mouth because he realized that now he’ll be able to take that cruise through the South Pacific islands next February.  In fact, he’ll be able to take a dozen friends.

I hate the dentist, not personally, of course, but the sound of metal scraping my teeth, the grit of that polishing stuff, the bright lights shining in my eyes, the sound of money slipping into my molars.  I hate that.

My daughter was heard chanting in the other room today.  “I’m doing the underpants dance.  First you wiggle your bottom!  Then you wiggle your pants!”

I will not be doing the underpants dance.  Especially considering that I can’t afford to shake any of my old fillings loose.

Adopt-a-book coming soon!  This is how it will work:

1)  I’ll list a book I’m going to relinquish.

2)  You’ll leave a comment and Paypal me a quarter (Melodee-at-gmail-dot-com–replace dashes/words with symbols).  [UPDATE:  Paypal takes the quarter as a “fee” if you fund your Paypal account with a debit/credit card.  I will pay the postage and if you win, you may choose to send me a buck or two to offset the costs.  Fair enough?]

3)  I will randomly choose a winner after, say, twenty-four hours.

4)  Book will be packed and shipped off to its new home.

We’ll see how this works and tweak the procedure if need be.

In other news, we’re having cold, blustery rain.  How is it where you live?  Really.  I want to know.

  1. Beautiful day here in Texas. I mean, I could have walked outside it was so nice. I was running the air conditioner in the pick up this afternoon.

  2. Hey Mel, you might want to check and see what Paypal’s minimum fee is for receiving cash. It might make your quarter null and void. Maybe for something that small there is no charge, but I know they do charge something.

  3. I think your idea of the quarter to help offset the mailing costs is a good one. But Shelley’s comment above may be something to think about. (I felt badly when you paid all the postage when I won one of your books, so this idea would definitely benefit everyone.)

Here in Virginia, today (Mon 11th) was absolutely beautiful! I worked outside with just a turtleneck on at 58 degrees. Tomorrow it’s more of the same before rain arrives on Wed. So it’s back outside to get more manure put on the garden before the wet weather comes. 🙂 Fun!

  4. Well, finally something I can’t relate to. I live the dentist! I love teeth. I’ve had two root canals, two apoectimeys and one implant (all on only TWO teeth) so you’d think I wouldn’t like them at all but I do. You have to find a good one though. My problems were from a dud in MD years ago.

  5. Hi Mel,
It’s gray and blustery here, threatening rain, and chilly. Not really cold, but it’s a damp chill so you never really feel warm, except under that quilt with a book. Not what the average tourist expects from the Med, but it’s normal for winter. Really. This area is called the Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) but even on the Costa there’s not always sol. I have found a gem of a dentist, by the way. I’m not thrilled with having my teeth worked on, but this guy is very good, actually waived his office visit fee because he forgot to quote it to me when I was checking prices, and he speaks English to boot! Can’t go wrong now! 🙂 Next time you need work done you can come out here to visit and I’ll make you an appointment! Wait until the summer, though, so we can go to the beach. (Sort of defeats the purpose of reasonable prices….but hey! It’s fun!):-) ~Mariah~

  6. I HATE going to the dentist. I cannot stand that whiny dentist wanna-be on Rudolph, even.

And, I have a good dentist. I still hate to go. HATE it.

It’s gloomy and rainy here. The snow is melting.

Actually, it’s much like the opening sentence to “The Cat in the Hat”.

  7. It’s cold and rainy here, and I’m near Chicago. Usually it’s wintery. Not sure what’s up. Love the book idea- are you saying we should or shouldn’t do the Paypal way? If we have it funded via checking account, there’s no fee, right?

  8. Here in Michigan, it is gray, windy, and rainy here too. Cold? Kind of… 48 degrees, actually pretty warm for this time of year and compared to last week’s temps in the upper 20s!

My 3-yo has her very first dental appt tomorrow (and my 11-yo has her umpteenth appt too). I still have to get in my second appt this year. I don’t mind the dentist so much, I have a great dentist, an ok hygenist, and the best dental assistant. I hate the sounds you hear in your head though, but I like the feeling of clean teeth and no pain in my mouth more.

  9. I’ve not been to the dentist in forever because if it’s not broke, why pay to find out that everything is okay? When I do go, the dentist is usually surprised at how healthy my teeth and gums are. It’s all thanks to that handy dandy electric toothbrush, I say.

It’s overcast in Kansas City, but our high is around 60. I could definitely use some of that warmth. I really dislike cold, blustery, “I-need-a-bath-just-to-warm-up” rain, which is supposed to be here next week. Oh well, perhaps it will lead to a white Christmas after all.

Looking forward to adopt a book because every good book deserves a good home.

  10. Here in Paris we have had a week plus of grey, rainy, windy, cold yuck weather. We are quite a bit further north than the US and so our days are also VERY short this time of year. The kids wait for the bus in the pitch dark and come home in the pitch dark. Oh well, soon the days will start to lengthen.
As for the dentist, can’t find a good one over here so I just go when I am back in the states. Oh my, that is next week!

  11. 78 in mid-December in Texas. Something’s wrong with that…I want the cold back!

And I’m with you…icky poo on the dentist! I haven’t been in 8 years and now I’m terrified of what the guy will find. Sigh.

  12. It was a balmy 74 today in NE Florida – horrible weather! It’s in the low 70’s all week, and most likely for Christmas too. Where is winter? Why don’t I get to wear my cute sweaters?

Also, is your version of the Underpants Dance from Captain Underpants? Cause that plays on heavy rotation around here….

  13. NW Oregon is cool and showery. Supposed to be down to freezing by Sunday.
I don’t mind the rain too much. I was born here so am pretty much acclimated to it. BUT the freezing I can do without as I have to drive to work at 4:30am!
I enjoy your writing. And TOTALLY sympathize with the dentist thing. Yak!
