Rainy Days and Fridays Never Get Me Down

Last night, my husband and I went with another couple to see United 93.  When it first opened a few weeks ago, I wanted to see it, but I just never found myself in the right frame of mind.  Yet, I knew it was an important movie, and reading this review by Susan Nielsen reminded me again that I ought to see it.

So we went.  I give high marks to the technical aspects of the film.  In fact, one of our companions is a retired military pilot and currently teaches commerical airline pilots.  (I think I have that right.)  I asked afterward if the depiction of the airline cockpit, the air traffic controllers and military personnel was accurate.  He said it was all exactly right.

You know the story of September 11, 2001.  But if you’re like me, you don’t think much about that day, where you were, what you saw, how you felt.  But as Memorial Day approaches, I embrace the memories.  The movie was exactly the right way to start the Memorial Day weekend for me.  We must remember the heroes who died defending our country, the ones who never wore military uniforms and the ones who did.

In other news, I accomplished great things today:

1)  I cleaned off my desk.

2)  I arranged to return unwanted items from Oriental Trading Company.

3)  I figured out how we will finish our school lessons in the next three weeks.

4)  I completed my order for Vacation Bible School.

5)  I remained sane, even though it won’t stop raining.  See?

  1. I’ve been thinking I should see this movie but haven’t gotten up the gumption yet.

Congrats on all your “to-dos” that you got done! And how do you update 2 blogs daily? I’m struggling to get more than 2 posts a week on 1 site!

  2. I’m really glad the movie lived up to the story and didn’t do an overly cheesy hollywood version, taking away from the courageous events that happened.

I actually still think about 9/11 often. I was living across the country when it happened in CA, but I was deeply affected and still haven’t been able to not tear up when I am reminded somehow of the widows and children and parents left behind and the terror experienced that day. It has not left my heart, and I’m grateful for your reminder and thoughts on the movie.

Congratulations on your all productivity! Yay, you got your VBS stuff done!

  3. I plan on seeing the movie next week. My son, then almost 4, still remebers 9-11. He was standing with Bill and I in the den watching the planes crash into the towers. He remembers me crying and Dad yelling, “There’s another one! What is going on?”.

    Just so sad.

  4. Like Laura I think of 9/11 often, particularly when I look out my office window and remember the huge clouds of black smoke billowing across the horizon from the direction of the Pentagon.

I don’t think I’ll ever want to see that movie. I’m just not ready for the Hollywood version of that day, that flight, no matter how good a job they did.

Hope you have a great Memorial Day, Mel. Congrats on your productivity!

  5. I don’t know if I’ll ever go see the movie. I live about 40 miles from the crash site and even though it has become a huge memorial to the heroes on board, I’ve never been there either.

  6. My husband went to see the movie and was deeply moved. Speechless. He said he couldn’t see it as a movie, but it was something that happened, and it was Real.
Me…? I love a pop-corn flick. Remember, I do not ivite reality home. I went to see X-Men 3, and you know what, People Died! That is so not fair. I should have just gone to see something serious it they are going to pull stunts like that. What a low blow!

  7. I would like to see that but will probably wait to rent it.

I HATE returning things to catalogs. It’s almost not worth it. Sometimes I resell them on Ebay and make a profit.
