At Last

It is finished.

The Christmas Letter, that is. Tomorrow I’ll take it to Kinko’s for color copying (oh, yes, it’s oh-so-fancy). Now, I think I’m ready for Christmas. Well, unless you count Christmas cookies–to bake or not to bake, that is the question–and buying gifts for the church staff. Oh, and a present for my husband.

By the way, my mother and I are Christmas Cookie Snobs. We can’t help it. We agreed the other night: chocolate chip cookies are simply not Christmas cookies. And if your sugar coookies aren’t made with butter and powdered sugar, you aren’t making them right. In fact, if you use those Pillsbury rolls of premade dough, I’m afraid I’m going to have to suspend your Christmas Cookie Baking License.

I’m just saying.

  1. O.K…. Now we have a problem.

    The conservative views… I could turn a blind-eye too.

But I CANNOT allow you to bash chocolate-chip cookies… the only cookies that I will EVER eat.

Until you change or soften your position, a state of war shall exist between us.

    Merry Christmas.

  2. I surrender my cookie baking license! I am baking cookies today and while I’m baking some from scratch, I am making several kinds that use Pillsbury sugar cookie dough as the starting point. I have to make enough cookies for 3 different Christmas celebrations, one alone will have over 30 people attending. It’s self-defense.

  3. Yeah, see chocolate chip are my FAV but I agree with you – they don’t feel like Christmas. But I will continue to bake them anyway…because REALLY, it is all about me anyway right?

  6. I say that any cookie you put in a Christmas tin and eat at Christmas time is a Christmas cookie. Of course I have my favorites, and my not-so-favorites (the ones that are left in the bottom of the tin and only eaten once I’m desperate.) By the way, I ate so many cookies yesterday that I didn’t even want lunch or dinner. (Yes I have a whopper headache from all that sugar.)

  7. Anyone who dares proclaim that my mother’s oh-so-the-best chocolate chip cookies — with pecans, mind you — are not fit fare for Christmas is just plain wrong.

On the other hand, I’m just as fond of her linzer tarts, walnut roll-ups, pecan tassies, and chocolate crinkles.

Unfortunately, I bet she uses splenda this year. Yuck.

And yes, I’ll shamefacedly announce my snobbishness too; I’d rather do without cookies than eat the store bakery kind — the round ones with the brightly colored snowman or santa in the center.

  10. I’ll join you as a Christmas cookie snob….chocolate chip cookies are not Christmas cookies at our house either. I finished the last of my holiday baking yesterday. I made 7 different kind of cookies, from scratch, and while a few of them had chocolate in them, and one even called for mini-chocolate chips, not one was a plain old chocolate chip cookie that you could make any old day. 🙂

  17. I have to agree with Mel on this one. I HATE it when I go to a cookie exchange and one of the offerings is Chocolate Chip Cookies – 1st of all, mine are the best, so all others pale in comparison – 2nd, I always thought the idea behind a cookie exchange was so that we would get all different types of CHRISTMAS cookies, and the variety would look just so lovely on the platter – sorry, while chocolate chip cookies taste devine, they don’t really make a good “showing” with all the other cool CHRISTMAS cookies out there – for the record, I made 11 different types (not all have to be baked, as some are considered “candy”) and not a one of them was a simple everyday cookie – sorry folks, I too am a Christmas cookie snob :o)

Hey, Mel, do we get to read the Holiday Letter??
